Basis For Determining The Winner

NBA Tiebreaker Rules for Two-Way Ties

Basis for Determining the Winner

In the event of a two-way tie in the NBA, the following tiebreakers are used in order:

  • Better overall winning percentage
  • Head-to-head won-lost percentage

Overall Winning Percentage

The team with the better overall winning percentage will be ranked higher. This is calculated by dividing the number of wins by the total number of games played.

Head-to-Head Won-Lost Percentage

If the teams have an identical overall winning percentage, the tie will be broken by their head-to-head record. The team with the better won-lost percentage in games played against the other team will be ranked higher.

Examples

For example, if Team A and Team B are tied with a 50% winning percentage, the tiebreaker will be their head-to-head record. If Team A won 2 of the 3 games they played against Team B, Team A would be ranked higher.

These tiebreaker rules are used to determine the standings in the NBA regular season and playoffs.
