Closures Part of Larger Trend in Retail

Supermarket Chain to Shutter Several Locations

BOSTON - Stop & Shop is preparing to close a number of underperforming stores in the coming years. The supermarket chain, which currently operates nearly 400 stores, including 27 locations in Rhode Island, is part of a growing trend of legacy retail chains scaling back their physical presence. Rite Aid and Bed Bath & Beyond are among the other retailers that have recently announced store closures.

Ahold Delhaize, the Netherlands-based parent company of Stop & Shop, Food Lion, and Hannaford, said it will close several underperforming stores.

The closures could have a significant impact on shoppers across the region. Stop & Shop is one of the largest grocery chains in New England. The company also operates Eastside Marketplace at 149 Franklin St. in Providence.

The company has not yet announced which stores will be closed. However, it is expected that the closures will be announced in the coming months.
